How Long Should You Rent a Dumpster for a Kitchen Remodel?

For most kitchen remodels, the 7 days included with every rental cover the demo and cleanup. Time the delivery for demo day, and call for pickup once the old kitchen is out. Extra days are $25 each.

How many days do you need a dumpster for a kitchen remodel?

Most kitchen remodels need a dumpster for the demo and cleanup days, not the whole project. Every Stout Bros rental includes 7 days, which covers a typical tear-out. Extra days are $25 each. Plan the dumpster around demo day, then call for pickup when the old kitchen is out.

Install work like cabinets, counters and flooring makes little debris. Paying to keep a dumpster through weeks of install rarely makes sense.

What does a kitchen remodel timeline look like?

A kitchen remodel usually runs in two phases: demo, which makes nearly all the debris, then install, which makes very little. The dumpster belongs in the demo phase. Here is an example timeline for a mid-size kitchen. Your contractor's schedule will differ, so build yours around their dates.

Example kitchen remodel schedule. Days are illustrative, not a standard.
Rental dayWorkDebris
Day 1Dumpster delivered; cabinets and counters outHeavy and bulky
Day 2–3Flooring, drywall and backsplash outHeavy: tile and drywall
Day 4–5Rough plumbing and electrical, cleanupLight scraps
Day 6–7Final sweep; dumpster picked upNone

If demo runs long, each day past 7 costs $25. Keeping it 3 extra days adds $75.

What if the remodel runs longer than 7 days?

If the remodel runs past 7 days, you can keep the dumpster at $25 per extra day for as long as you need. That works well when demo stretches a few days. For a long gap between demo and a second round of debris, a pickup and a later rental can cost less.

Do the math with your contractor's dates. Ten extra days is $250. Compare that with booking a second dumpster when the next debris phase starts.

When should you swap instead of extending?

Swap when the dumpster is full but work continues; extend when you have room but need more time. A swap means we haul the full dumpster and drop an empty one, billed as a new rental. Extra days at $25 only buy time, not space.

Kitchen demo is heavier than it looks. Tile, stone and plaster reach the weight limit fast, and overage is $75 per ton by the exact pound. The remodeling dumpster page sizes jobs by room, and how dumpster weight is billed shows the weight math.

Kitchen remodel dumpster questions

Should the dumpster arrive before demo day or on it?

Have the dumpster arrive the morning of demo day or the day before. Your 7 days start at delivery, so an early drop uses days you may need later. Book by 3 PM for guaranteed next-day delivery, and drops run from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Can you pick up early if demo takes only two days?

Call for pickup as soon as the dumpster is full or the demo is done. You don't have to keep it the full 7 days. An early pickup also clears your driveway sooner for deliveries of new cabinets and counters.

Is a 20-yard dumpster enough for a kitchen remodel?

A 20-yard dumpster fits most kitchen remodels, with 3 tons and 7 days included. A small galley kitchen may fit a 15-yard. Tile, stone counters and plaster add weight fast, so tell us what is coming out. The 20-yard dumpster page has the full specs.

Should I keep the dumpster for the install packaging?

Keep it only if the install happens within a few days of demo. Cabinet boxes and packaging are bulky but light. If install is weeks away, the extra days at $25 each add up faster than the space is worth. Breaking down boxes for recycling or curbside trash is often cheaper.
