Roofing Dumpster Rental in Odessa by Roof Squares

Most one-layer roofs up to about 25 squares fit a 20-yard dumpster, and up to about 33 squares fit a 30-yard. Shingles hit the weight limit before the dumpster looks full, so we size by squares and layers, not by eye.

What size dumpster do I need for my roof?

A 20-yard dumpster holds about 25 squares of one-layer asphalt shingles before passing its 3 included tons. A 30-yard holds about 33 squares. Two layers cut each number in half. These counts use an example shingle weight of 240 lb per square, so check your own bundles.

Squares that fit inside the included tons, at an example 240 lb per square per layer. One square is 100 sq ft of roof.

How much do roofing shingles weigh in a dumpster?

One square of asphalt shingles weighs about 240 lb if your bundles weigh 80 lb and 3 bundles cover a square. Loose tear-off weighs about 731 lb per cubic yard, by EPA conversion factors. A 20-yard dumpster reaches its 3 tons with only about 8 cubic yards of shingles inside.

That is why a roofing dumpster looks less than half full when it hits the weight limit. Do the math with your own bundle weight from the wrapper. Weight per square = bundle weight × bundles per square × layers.

Worked example: a 28-square, one-layer roof in a 20-yard dumpster. 28 × 240 lb = 6,720 lb. That is 720 lb over the 6,000 lb included. 720 lb is 0.36 tons, and 0.36 × $75 = $27. Where should the roofing dumpster go?

The roofing dumpster should sit as close to the eaves as the driveway allows, so the crew can drop tear-off straight in. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt. Move cars, trailers and boats out of the drop zone before delivery day.

Watch for low power lines and tree limbs over the spot. If the truck can't place the dumpster, a $125 trip fee applies. The driveway placement guide covers the room the truck needs.

Will the dumpster be there before the crew?

Book by 3 PM and next-day delivery is guaranteed, with drops between 7 AM and 5 PM. For an early-morning tear-off, book delivery for the day before the crew starts. The driver texts or calls 20–30 minutes ahead, and nobody needs to be home if the spot is clear.

Same-day requests cost a $50 rush fee and depend on a free truck.

Do you need a debris chute for a roof tear-off?

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when debris drops more than 20 feet to any point outside a building's exterior walls. Most one-story roofs drop less than that. A two-story tear-off may need a chute, or a dumpster placed right against the wall.

The law applies to employers and their crews. We recommend asking your roofer how they plan to get debris down before you pick the spot. Confirm with your city, HOA or landfill for any local rules.

Does hail season change when to book a roofing dumpster?

Hail drives roof work in Odessa. Hail was reported in West Odessa on March 5, 2026 and near Odessa again on October 13, 2026. After a storm, many roofs get replaced in the same weeks, so book the dumpster as soon as your roofer sets a tear-off date.

Call with the address and date, and the 3 PM cut-off still gets you next-day delivery.

How should the crew load shingles to stay under the weight?

Spread shingles evenly across the whole floor of the dumpster instead of piling them under one spot of the eaves. An even load hauls safely and keeps debris below the top rim. Stop loading shingles once your squares match the size table, and put decking and felt in last.

  • Move the drop point along the eaves as the pile grows, or rake debris toward the far end.
  • Keep shingles out of the dumpster doors so they open cleanly at the landfill.
  • Pull nails and loose metal off the driveway before the truck returns.
  • Keep neighbors' household junk out. It adds weight you pay for.

More loading tips are in how to load a dumpster.

What if the roof is bigger than one dumpster?

A roof too big for one dumpster gets a swap: we haul the full dumpster and drop an empty one, billed as a new rental. Example: a 50-square, one-layer roof weighs about 12,000 lb. Two 20-yard loads of 25 squares each stay inside 3 tons apiece.

Another way is one 30-yard for about 33 squares, then a 15-yard for the last 17. Call for the swap when the first dumpster is level with the rim, not above it. Texas law requires loads to be contained on the road, so we don't haul a dumpster filled above the rim (Transportation Code ch. 725).

Every rental includes 7 days. A tear-off that runs long costs $25 for each extra day. The full list of charges is on the dumpster rental cost page, and banned items are on what you can put in a dumpster. For a one-minute version, tap through the roof tear-off web story.

Roofing dumpster rental questions

Will a 30-square roof fit in one dumpster?

A one-layer, 30-square roof at 240 lb per square weighs about 7,200 lb. That fits under the 30-yard dumpster's 8,000 lb. In a 20-yard, the same roof runs 1,200 lb over its 6,000 lb, which is 0.6 tons × $75 = $45. Both work. The 30-yard just leaves room for decking and felt.

Do two layers of shingles really double the weight?

Two layers means twice the shingles per square, so the weight per square doubles. At 240 lb a layer, each square of a two-layer tear-off weighs about 480 lb. A 20-yard dumpster then holds about 12 squares inside its 3 tons, not 25. Count every layer before you book.

Can the old decking and felt go in with the shingles?

Rotten decking, felt, drip edge, flashing and nails all go in with the shingles. Plywood and OSB weigh about 268 lb per cubic yard by EPA conversion factors, much lighter than tear-off at 731. Decking adds bulk more than weight, so leave space for it when you pick the size.

What happens if it rains on the shingles before pickup?

Wet debris weighs more, and you pay for weight on the scale ticket. Pull a tarp over the open dumpster at the end of each day if rain is in the forecast. Keep the tarp below the top rim so the load stays level and can be hauled.

Can the roofer toss shingles straight off the roof into the dumpster?

Crews often drop tear-off straight from the eaves into a dumpster parked right below. OSHA requires an enclosed chute when debris drops more than 20 feet to a point outside the building's exterior walls. On a one-story house, the drop from the eaves is usually well under 20 feet.

How many bundles of shingles make a square?

Most architectural shingles take 3 bundles per square, which covers 100 square feet. GAF Timberline HDZ, for example, covers 33.3 square feet per bundle. Check the wrapper on your own bundles for the coverage and weight, then multiply to get pounds per square.
