What size dumpster does a construction job need?

A 30-yard dumpster with 4 tons included handles most framing, addition and new-build waste, because lumber and packaging are bulky but light. Interior finish-outs heavy with drywall often fit a 20-yard with 3 tons. Concrete, block and dirt go in a separate 10 or 15-yard.

Starting points by job type. Your debris mix decides the final size.
JobUsual sizeIncluded weightWhat limits the load
New home framing and sheathing30-yard4 tonsVolume. Lumber scraps are light.
Room or garage addition20 or 30-yard3 or 4 tonsVolume, until drywall goes in
Drywall and interior finish-out20-yard3 tonsWeight. Drywall is heavy.
Commercial tenant build-out30-yard, with swaps4 tons per loadBoth, depending on the mix
Major demolition or large new build40-yard5 tonsVolume first; watch drywall and plaster
Footings, slab or block tear-out10 or 15-yard2 or 2.5 tonsWeight. Load halfway up only.

Every size is a roll-off with 7 days included, and the 20 and 30-yard share a 22 by 8 ft footprint. The 40-yard is 8 ft tall with 5 tons included for the biggest jobs. Compare every size on the dumpster size guide. For ongoing trash at a finished business, see commercial front-load service.

How much does construction debris weigh?

Mixed construction and demolition debris weighs about 417 to 484 lb per cubic yard, by EPA conversion factors. Lumber weighs about 169 lb and drywall about 467 lb per cubic yard. A 30-yard full of mixed debris can pass its 4 tons, while a 30-yard of clean lumber stays well under.

Worked example: a 30-yard filled level with mixed debris at 417 lb per cubic yard. 30 × 417 = 12,510 lb. That is 4,510 lb over the 8,000 lb included, or 2.255 tons. At $75 per ton, the overage is about $169.13, billed by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket.

The same 30-yard full of lumber scraps weighs about 5,070 lb and has no overage. Keeping drywall and heavy debris out of the framing dumpster is the cheapest move on most sites. See how dumpster weight is billed.

Which debris should get its own dumpster?

Concrete, block, brick and dirt should get their own 10 or 15-yard dumpster, loaded only halfway up the walls. A clean load of only concrete or only dirt qualifies for clean-fill pricing. Mixed into a 30-yard of framing waste, the same heavy debris costs $75 per ton over 4 tons.

  • Framing dumpster: lumber, sheathing, trim, cardboard, packaging and scrap metal.
  • Finish dumpster: drywall, insulation, flooring and cabinet boxes.
  • Heavy-debris dumpster: broken concrete, block, brick, dirt and rock only.

Two smaller loads often cost less than one heavy, mixed load. Ask about splitting debris when you call.

Where should the dumpster go on a dirt or caliche job site?

The dumpster needs a firm, level spot the roll-off truck can back straight into, with no low power lines or limbs overhead. Packed caliche and dry, compacted dirt work well. Fresh fill, soft sand and ground near open trenches can let the truck or the dumpster sink.

Pick a spot close to the work but clear of the concrete pump, material drops and future driveway pours. On paved lots, our drivers set wooden boards under the rails. If the driver can't drop or pick up because of a locked gate, parked equipment or low wires, a $125 trip fee applies.

Commercial sites near oilfield roads get the same roll-off service as any other job site. Oily soil, drilling mud and other oilfield waste follow separate rules, so they don't belong in a construction roll-off. The placement guide covers the space the truck needs.

What rules apply to construction debris?

Two federal rules shape most job sites. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when debris drops more than 20 feet to a point outside the building's exterior walls. The EPA asbestos rule, 40 CFR 61.145, requires inspection before demolition or renovation and notice before demolition.

These are the law for employers and owners. Our own rules are separate: no hazardous chemicals, wet paint or batteries in any dumpster. We recommend keeping fuel cans, oily rags and sealant tubes out as well. Confirm with your city, HOA or landfill for local rules.

How do swaps and extensions work on a long build?

A swap means we haul the full dumpster and drop an empty one, and each swap counts as a new rental with its own 7 days and included tons. If the dumpster isn't full at day 7, keep it for $25 per extra day instead. Call by 3 PM for a next-day swap.

Example: a framing crew fills a 30-yard in 5 days. One swap gives them a fresh 30-yard and a new 7-day clock, so framing can keep going. A finish crew that only fills half a dumpster in 10 days pays 3 extra days, or $75, and no second haul.

Each load's scale ticket comes with its own final invoice, emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup. That makes it simple to bill debris back to each phase. The cost guide lists every possible charge.

Construction dumpster rental questions

How fast can you swap a full dumpster on my job site?

Call when the dumpster is full and we schedule the swap like a new delivery. Book by 3 PM and the swap is guaranteed for the next day, between 7 AM and 5 PM. Same-day swaps carry a $50 rush fee and depend on a truck being free.

Can I put drywall, lumber and concrete in the same dumpster?

Drywall, lumber, trim, cardboard and packaging can share a dumpster. Concrete, block, brick and dirt should go in a separate 10 or 15-yard loaded only halfway up. Mixed in with framing scraps, heavy debris pushes a 30-yard past its 4 tons fast, and a clean concrete load gets clean-fill pricing.

Can you drop a dumpster on a rural lot outside town?

We deliver to job sites up to about 80 miles from Odessa, including rural lots on dirt and caliche. The ground needs to be firm and level, with a straight approach and no low lines. Send a pin or clear directions with the booking so the driver finds the gate.

Who is responsible if the dumpster is overloaded on site?

Debris must stay level with the top rim. An overloaded dumpster can't be hauled under Texas law. If the driver finds it overfilled, the $125 trip fee applies and the crew removes the excess before pickup. Remind subs to stop at the rim and call for a swap.

What about scrap metal and leftover materials?

Scrap metal, wire offcuts and packaging can go in the dumpster with other construction debris. Leftover chemicals, sealants that are still wet, fuel cans and batteries cannot. Pull clean, reusable lumber and full boxes of material before the dumpster fills, since they add weight and take space.

Do I need an asbestos survey before demolition?

The EPA asbestos rule, 40 CFR 61.145, requires a thorough inspection before demolition or renovation of a regulated facility, and advance notice before demolition. Regulated facilities include commercial buildings and apartment buildings with more than four units. Confirm what your job needs with the state or a licensed asbestos inspector before you tear out.
