How to Get Rid of Old Shingles After a Tear-Off

The easiest way to get rid of old shingles is a roll-off dumpster set beside the house before the tear-off starts. Size it by roof squares and layers, because shingles hit the weight limit before the bin looks full.

What is the easiest way to get rid of old shingles?

The easiest way to get rid of old shingles is a roll-off dumpster parked near the roof before the tear-off begins. The crew drops debris straight in, and the truck hauls it to the landfill. A 20-yard dumpster includes 3 tons, which holds about 25 squares of a single-layer asphalt roof.

Shingles are too heavy and too many for curbside trash. Hauling them yourself means many trips in a loaded pickup. A dumpster keeps nails and debris in one place instead of across your yard.

How much do old shingles weigh?

Old shingles weigh about 240 lb per roof square in a common example. That assumes 80 lb bundles and 3 bundles per square, so check the weight on your own bundle wrapper. A roof square is 100 square feet. Two layers of shingles roughly double the weight.

Worked example at 240 lb per square, one layer. Use your own bundle weight for your roof.
DumpsterIncluded tonsIncluded poundsAbout how many squares

15-yard2.55,000 lbAbout 20
20-yard36,000 lbAbout 25
30-yard48,000 lbAbout 33

Here is the math for a 28-square roof: 28 × 240 lb = 6,720 lb. In a 20-yard dumpster, that is 720 lb over the 6,000 lb included. At $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound, the overage is $27. The EPA conversion factors list asphalt roofing tear-off at about 731 lb per loose cubic yard.

Can you haul old shingles in a pickup truck?

You can haul old shingles in a pickup, but a tear-off fills many loads. A 25-square roof at 240 lb per square weighs about 6,000 lb, which is more than most pickups should carry in one trip. Each trip also means loading twice and paying the landfill each visit.

If you go this route, call the landfill first to ask what it accepts, its rates and its hours. Cover the bed, because Texas law requires loose loads to be contained so they don't blow off.

What happens after a hail storm in Odessa?

After a hail storm, book the dumpster as soon as your roofer sets the tear-off date, so it lands the day before the crew. Hail was reported near Odessa twice this year: on March 5, 2026, in West Odessa, and on October 13, 2026. Storm repairs often bunch up in the weeks after.

Which dumpster should you book for your roof?

Most single-layer roofs up to about 25 squares fit a 20-yard dumpster with 3 tons included. Smaller roofs fit a 15-yard. Bigger roofs, or two layers, need a 30-yard with 4 tons or a swap. The roofing dumpster page sizes it by squares and layers.

Read how dumpster weight is billed before you book, and see the 20-yard dumpster page for its footprint and specs. Call with your squares and layers, and we will match the size to the weight.

Shingle disposal questions

Can old roof decking go in the same dumpster as the shingles?

Old plywood or plank decking can go in the same dumpster with the shingles. Wood is light for its bulk, so it adds volume more than weight. Lay sheets flat on top of the shingle layer to keep the load level with the rim.

What if my roof has two layers of shingles?

Two layers roughly double the weight per square. A roof that fits a 20-yard dumpster with one layer may need a 30-yard or a swap with two. Tell us the number of layers when you book so we can size the dumpster by tons, not just by roof area.

Who should book the dumpster, me or my roofer?

Check your roofing contract first. Many roofers include debris removal and bring their own dumpster. If the contract leaves disposal to you, book the dumpster so it lands the day before the crew starts. Book by 3 PM for guaranteed next-day delivery.

Can the dumpster sit on the lawn close to the roof edge?

We recommend a driveway or other hard surface over soft lawn. A loaded shingle dumpster is heavy and can sink and rut grass. Wooden boards go under the rails on concrete and asphalt. Ask your crew how far they can carry or chute debris to the spot.
